Implementation: Design proposal

The architecture of Rome, the Eternal City has been purposefully designed to bring meaning to the infrastructure of the city. Built over 2500 years, the chapel has served as a division between the ethereal space and the mortal space. Common buildings are designed to yield to the chapel in height. The city’s underground space is considered a negative space that is home to the Catacombs of San Callisto, sewer systems, and floodwater. This place is known as “the secret under the rose” to represent unspoken subjects of darkness in this city.

By following the historical design rules and conservation plans, present buildings are confined to a certain height. The only option is to build underground. The citizens and tourists begin to shift their daily activities into “the secret under the rose” space. The historical structures remain intact, but the development of space is now being redefined underground.

Rome, the Eternal City, has been purposefully designed to bring meaning to the infrastructure of the city. Built over 2500 years, public buildings occupied most areas on the earth. The cathedral is conspicuous and towering, has served as a division between the ethereal space and the mortal space. Common buildings are designed to yield to the cathedral in height. On the contrary, the underground space of the city is considered a negative space that is home to the Catacombs of San Callisto, sewer systems, and floodwater. These places are known as “the secret under the rose” to represent unspoken subjects of darkness in this city.

Nowadays, all of constructions in the historic center of Rome are confined to building by following the design rules and conservation plans. The only option is to build underground. We begin to shift the daily activities of citizens and tourists into the underground. The historical context remains intact, but the development of space is now being redefined underground.
