Taipei Railway Workshop was completed in 1935. It was the prosperous and modernizing period of the machine age, the era in which city development was closely related to industry. However, the factories and machines which marked Taipei’s evolution eventually became massive industrial ruins due to urbanization. For many residents of the city, the Taipei Railway Workshop is a downtown secret. After it was designated a national heritage site in 2015, a plan was made to build the Taiwan Railway Museum on its premises.

We proposed a” landscape restoration” plan for Taipei Railway Workshop to give a new ecological, social, and cultural definition to the old industrial landscape, thus redefining what Taipei Railway Workshop is to the city.

LANDSCAPE RESTORATION PLAN

Taipei Railway Workshop is still a brownfield with suspected pollution, including soil contamination and water pollution. We have proposed a four-stage restoration plan that uses soil, water and planting as the primary mechanism to purify the contaminated site. The West Crane area would become a water purifying space that combines a museum. During the restoration, some areas will be open to the public. In the future, as the renovation process of the Taipei Railway Workshop is gradually completed and it is reopened, it will carry all the memories of the Taipei Railway Workshop in the most uncontaminated state possible.
